How we select formulas, handle units, validate inputs, round results, and review every published calculator.

Calculation standards

Direct converters use fixed physical relationships between compatible units. Power units convert through watts; energy units convert through joules. Values stay at full JavaScript numeric precision during calculation and are rounded only for display.

Core BTU relationships

  • 1 international-table BTU = 1,055.05585262 joules.
  • 1 BTU per hour = 0.29307107 watts.
  • 1 watt = approximately 3.412141633 BTU per hour.
  • 1 ton of refrigeration = 12,000 BTU per hour.

Units and dimensional checks

A conversion is permitted only when the source and destination describe the same physical quantity. BTU is energy, while BTU/hr is power. Multi-input calculators first combine inputs into the required dimension—for example, BTU/lb multiplied by lb/hr produces BTU/hr—before converting the result.

Validation and rounding

  • Blank, non-numeric, negative, infinite, and unsupported values are rejected.
  • Comma decimal input is normalized when it is unambiguous.
  • Reasonable upper limits protect the interface from meaningless overflow.
  • Intermediate values are never rounded before the final displayed result.
  • Scientific notation is used for extremely small or large results.

Estimates and limitations

Direct unit conversions are mathematical equivalences. Sizing, efficiency, airflow, fuel, and equipment calculators are estimates because real installations depend on construction, climate, operating conditions, manufacturer ratings, losses, codes, and measurement quality. Each calculator states its important assumptions beside the tool.

Review process

  • Check the formula and dimensions independently.
  • Verify representative normal, boundary, reverse, and rounding cases.
  • Compare constants with recognized SI and engineering definitions.
  • Review visible units, examples, FAQs, metadata, and structured data together.
  • Record the public review date and correct reported errors promptly.

Editorial scope and accountability

The site team is responsible for the published calculations and text. We do not present the pages as individualized engineering advice or claim review by a named professional when no such review has occurred. Examples labeled typical or illustrative are context aids, not product specifications. Manufacturer data, codes, tariffs, and measured site conditions take priority where they apply.

A correction is checked wherever the same fact appears: calculator copy, examples, FAQs, blog articles, metadata, and structured data. Material technical changes update the public review date.
